Before you open an account from India
Read the RBI’s rules first. As of October 2026, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) permits residents to trade forex only with authorised persons, for permitted purposes, on RBI-authorised electronic trading platforms or on recognised exchanges (NSE, BSE and MSE). It says residents who trade on unauthorised platforms are liable for penal action under FEMA, and that remittances under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme cannot be used for margin abroad. Every broker on this page is licensed outside India and is not authorised by the RBI: is forex trading legal in India.
The RBI also publishes an Alert List of entities that are not authorised to deal in forex or to operate forex trading platforms; the current version is dated 19 November 2025. The RBI says the list is not exhaustive: an entity missing from it should not be assumed to be authorised. The list names some forex brokers and prop firms, without giving a reason for each entry. Check it before opening an account with any overseas broker. This page lists brokers that take clients from India; it is not a statement that using them is lawful for a resident of India, and that decision, with its legal risk, is the reader’s.
Which entity serves clients from India?
A broker’s best-known licence often does not apply to every client. Clients from India are served by the brokers’ offshore entities:
| Broker | Entity for clients from India | Regulator | Negative balance protection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tickmill | Tickmill Ltd | FSA (Seychelles) | Yes |
| Pepperstone | Pepperstone Markets Limited | SCB (Bahamas) | Yes |
| XM | XM Global Limited (operator of xm.com) | FSC (Belize) | Yes, according to XM |
| IC Markets | Raw Trading Ltd | FSA (Seychelles) | No |
| FxPro | FxPro Global Markets Ltd (most clients outside the UK) | SCB (Bahamas) | Yes |
Entities as stated in each broker’s own documents, checked October 2026; the entity that opens an account is named in the client agreement shown at sign-up. Offshore regulators generally offer fewer protections than the FCA or ASIC, and Indian complaint channels do not apply: forex regulation.
Prop firm challenges are a different product with their own rules: prop firms that accept traders from India.
How we chose these brokers
The list includes every broker we have reviewed that takes clients from India, ranked by its overall score under our review methodology. Scores reflect the whole broker group; the entity that serves clients from India is shown in the table above. Some of these brokers pay us a commission when a reader opens an account; this does not affect scores or order. Brokers that are not on the page have not been reviewed yet.
The legal route in India
The legal route for an individual is exchange-traded currency derivatives: futures and options on NSE, BSE or MSE, opened through a broker registered with SEBI in the currency derivatives segment. On NSE, rupee-pair contracts trade from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM IST; cross-currency pairs such as EUR/USD carry no purpose restriction: is forex trading legal in India, forex market hours in India.
