Forex Swap Calculator

A forex swap calculator converts the swap rate your broker quotes into money: the charge or credit for each night a position stays open, and the total for the nights you plan to hold it. Enter the swap rate in points or as an amount per lot, the lot size, the day you open the trade and the number of nights; the triple-swap day is counted three times.

How to use the swap calculator

  1. Choose the symbol. The point size, contract size and quote currency are filled in with common values; correct them from your platform's symbol specification if they differ.
  2. Enter the swap rate for your side of the trade (long or short) from the same specification. Enter a charge as a negative number.
  3. If your broker quotes swap as money per lot rather than in points, switch the unit.
  4. Choose your account currency; if it differs from the symbol's quote currency, enter the conversion rate.
  5. Enter the lot size, the day you open the position and how many nights you plan to hold it.

Forex swap formula

Swap per night (rate in points)
swap = swap rate (points) × point size × contract size × lots
Total swap
total = swap per night × swap days

Swap days count one for each weekday rollover the position is open through and three for the triple-swap day. Nights starting on Saturday and Sunday have no rollover; the weekend is covered by the triple day.

EUR/USD

Assumptions: USD account, 1 lot long EUR/USD, swap rate −6.5 points (example rate), point size 0.00001, contract size 100,000, opened on Monday and held for 7 nights, triple swap on Wednesday.

Per night: −6.5 × 0.00001 × 100,000 × 1 = −6.50 dollars. Swap days: 1 + 1 + 3 + 1 + 1 = 7. Total: −45.50 dollars.

Gold (XAU/USD)

Assumptions: USD account, 0.10 lots long XAU/USD, swap rate −30 points (example rate), point size 0.01, contract size 100 ounces, held over one Wednesday night (triple swap on Wednesday).

Per night: −30 × 0.01 × 100 × 0.10 = −3.00 dollars. The Wednesday rollover counts three days: −9.00 dollars.

Why swap is charged or paid

A position held overnight is rolled to the next value date, and the swap reflects the interest rate difference between the two currencies, adjusted by the broker's own markup. Because of the markup, many pairs show a negative swap on both the long and the short side. Rates change with central bank rates and are set by each broker, so the same trade can cost different amounts at different brokers:what is a swap in forex.

Swap in points, money or percent

MetaTrader platforms usually show swap in points per lot. Some brokers quote it as money per lot, and some as an annual percentage of the position value; for a percentage, multiply the position value by the rate and divide by 365 (or 360, as the broker specifies) to get the amount per day. This calculator covers the point and money units; check how your broker states the rate before entering it.

Frequently asked questions

How is forex swap calculated?

When the broker quotes swap in points per lot, as MetaTrader does: swap per night = swap rate in points × point size × contract size × lots. The result is in the quote currency of the pair and is converted into your account currency. Multiply by the number of swap days the position is held.

Why is swap charged three times on Wednesday?

Spot trades in most currency pairs normally settle two business days after the trade date, so the rollover made on Wednesday moves settlement across the weekend and covers three days. Many brokers apply the triple swap on Wednesday for forex; the day can differ for metals or indices, so check the symbol specification.

How do I calculate swap on gold (XAU/USD)?

With the same formula. On a platform where one point is 0.01 and one lot is 100 ounces, a swap rate of −30 points (example rate) costs −30 × 0.01 × 100 = −30 dollars per night on 1 lot and −0.30 dollars on 0.01 lots.

Where do I find the swap rate?

In the symbol specification on your trading platform (in MetaTrader, right-click the symbol in Market Watch and open Specification) or on your broker’s contract specification pages. Long and short rates differ and change over time.

Is swap charged if I close the trade the same day?

No. Swap is applied only to positions still open at the daily rollover, which most brokers make around 5 PM New York time.

Can swap be positive?

Yes. When the interest rate of the currency you hold is sufficiently higher than the one you are short, and after the broker’s markup, the swap can be a credit. Many pairs show a negative swap on both sides because of that markup.
